Can You Get Lip Blush While Breastfeeding?

It is generally not recommended to get lip blush or any permanent makeup procedure while breastfeeding. Here are some reasons why:

  1. Infection Risks: There is always a risk of infection with any tattooing or piercing procedure. This risk is higher during breastfeeding, as the mother's immune system is altered, making it harder to fight infections. If an infection occurs, it can be transmitted to the baby through breastmilk.

  2. Topical Anesthetics: Permanent makeup procedures often use numbing creams or anesthetics to reduce discomfort. These chemicals can enter the bloodstream and potentially harm the baby. Some OBGYNs may recommend pumping and dumping breastmilk for 48 hours after the procedure to remove the anesthetics, but many artists and clients prefer to wait until breastfeeding is completed.

  3. Facial Tissue Changes: During pregnancy and breastfeeding, facial tissue can stretch due to fluid retention, which may affect the appearance of the tattoo. This can lead to a different shape or color of the tattoo once the facial tissue returns to normal.

  4. Pigment and Ingredient Safety: The safety of tattoo pigments and other ingredients used in permanent makeup during breastfeeding is not well understood. There is a risk of allergic reactions or other adverse effects, which could impact the mother and the baby.

  5. Liability and Insurance: Many insurance policies do not cover permanent makeup procedures for pregnant or breastfeeding women due to the potential risks involved. This means that both the client and the artist may be at risk if something goes wrong.

In summary, while it is technically possible to get lip blush or other permanent makeup procedures while breastfeeding, it is generally not recommended due to the potential risks and complications involved. It is best to wait until breastfeeding is completed to ensure the safety of both the mother and the baby.
